For Tony, 2024 marked a turning point.

At 52, Tony decided it was finally time to pursue something he鈥檇 wanted for years: a college degree. Enrolling 海棠直播 and working toward an AA in Computer Information Systems (CIS) became part of a much larger life shift鈥攐ne rooted in recovery, growth, and choosing a different future.

鈥淚鈥檇 always wanted a college degree,鈥 Tony shared. 鈥淚 just hadn鈥檛 been in a place where I could do it. I decided to take the plunge and see how far I could go with a little education.鈥

That leap paid off quickly. School became a source of structure, pride, and momentum鈥攚hat Tony describes as the perfect replacement for old habits. The effort he put in was met with positive feedback, strong grades, and a growing sense of confidence. His first term ended with a 4.0 GPA, an achievement that proved to him that he could do this.

鈥淓ven this old brain is still working if I put in the effort,鈥 he said with a laugh. 鈥淚t became a matter of pride.鈥

While CIS is his chosen field, some of Tony鈥檚 most meaningful experiences came from unexpected places. Writing courses and sociology鈥攅specially Introduction to Queer Studies and Composition I & II鈥攂ecame highlights of his academic journey. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 want those classes to be over,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey were the most rewarding.鈥

Support also played a key role. Through STEP, Tony connected with his coach, Tu鈥攕omeone he describes as genuinely invested in his success. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 even know the program existed,鈥 he said. 鈥淛ust having someone to check in with, someone who cared鈥攊t made a huge difference.鈥

One standout moment came when Tony was invited to join the honor society. 鈥淚 never thought that would be me,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t felt like a thumbs-up from the universe鈥攍ike, okay, you鈥檙e doing the right thing.鈥

Today, Tony approaches school with the same values guiding his recovery: honesty, consistency, and follow-through. 鈥淚鈥檝e learned I can keep my word to myself,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 can have structure. I can have a plan.鈥

When asked what he鈥檇 say to someone in recovery who鈥檚 thinking about going back to school, Tony didn鈥檛 hesitate. Education, he says, gives your days purpose, connection, and payoff. 鈥All you have to do is do the work, it鈥檚 amazing the success possible when you do. and its validation you鈥檙e not late- you鈥檙e right on time鈥, he said.聽

鈥淚鈥檓 just truly, truly grateful,鈥 he said. 鈥淔or PCC, for the instructors, for the computer lab, for everyone who helped me along鈥攅ven when they didn鈥檛 know they were.鈥

Tony鈥檚 story is a reminder that it鈥檚 never too late to begin鈥攁nd that with the right support, growth is always possible.
