Members of the PCC community, as well as the general public, will have the opportunity to view and participate in the upcoming ā€œBioneersā€ sustainability conference in San Rafael, Calif. – without leaving Portland.

ā€œBeaming Bioneersā€ – set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19 through Sunday, Oct. 21 in the Moriarty Auditorium ŗ£ĢÄÖ±²„’s Cascade Campus, 705 N. Killingsworth St. – will allow participants to take part in one of the world’s leading forums on sustainability and ecological responsibility.

ā€œBioneers brings together social and scientific innovators to address pressing issues in sustainability and social justice that face our culture today,ā€ said Esther Forbyn, student body president at Cascade Campus and one of the event’s organizers.

Each day of Beaming Bioneers will feature the ā€œbeamingā€ portion from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., during which attendees will be able to see the speakers and presentations from the San Rafael conference. The remainder of each day will be given over to in-person speakers, workshops, and performances, including a performance from the world-renowned Jefferson Dancers (from Jefferson High School in North Portland) at 3:30 p.m. Fri., Oct. 19. Free coffee will be provided throughout the event by CafĆ© Mam and the Cherry Sprout Market.

Other speakers and presentations will include the Urban Farming Collective (live and in person at 2 p.m. on Oct. 19); Bill McKibben of 350.org (via simulcast at 9 a.m. on Oct. 20); The ReBuilding Center (live and in person at 2 p.m. on Oct. 20); and Paul Hawken, author of ā€œNatural Capitalismā€ (via simulcast at 11:45 a.m. on Oct. 21).

This is the first time that Beaming Bioneers will be presented in Portland, said Forbyn.

ā€œBioneers is expensive to attend in person,ā€ she said, ā€œand most Beaming Bioneers sites charge admission as well. We made an effort to make our event cost-free so that Portland could be part of this important discussion.ā€
