Details about this class

Hello! My name is Megan, and I will be teaching this section of Bi112. This course will explore cell biology with an emphasis on health-related issues. We will be covering topics such as the scientific method, cellular function, and cellular division. Bi112 is designed to prepare you for anatomy and physiology by helping you build a foundation of biological concepts and vocabulary.

 Class Meetings

This is a hybrid course with both an online component and an in-person component. The online component includes pre-recorded lecture videos that you will be required to watch on your own instead of formal in-person lecture meetings. The in-person component will consist of weekly “recitation” in-person meetings and lab.

During recitation, we will review lecture material, complete some in-class practice, and work collaboratively on homework assignments. Lecture exams will also take place during this designated time slot. Lecture slides, study guides, and practice questions will be provided on the class website to help guide your review of the material. Assessments will include three exams, weekly quizzes, and weekly homework assignments.

For the lab, you will learn lab and microscope skills, plus reinforce our lecture material with hands-on experiments. Weekly lab assessments include a pre-lab, post-lab, microscope practice, and an in-person quiz.

 Attendance

Exams are in-person and taken during the recitation meetings. Attendance at non-exam lectures is expected, but not mandatory.

Bi112 laboratory attendance is required, and students who miss more than two labs cannot pass Bi112 regardless of their grade in the lecture portion of the course.

 Course Materials

Textbook: We use Campbell Biology in Focus textbook available through the bookstore. Mastering Biology is not required. You may find older editions at more affordable prices which are also acceptable.

Alternatively, you may use an which is available for free. However, the Campbell Biology textbook is preferred as it is more detailed and contains more information than the OER textbook. My lectures and materials will be based on the information from the Campbell Biology textbook.

Lab Manual: Cell Biology for Health Occupations Lab Manual (2024)- PCC Rock Creek.  You will be printing this manual from our D2L page.

Scantrons: You will need 3 Scantron sheets (882-E, which have 50 questions per side). These are available at the bookstore.
