I think of this class as a book club.We’ll explore a variety of fictional writing—short stories, some really short stories, and one novel—with an emphasis on figuring out how fiction works and what makes it useful in our world. C'mon. It'll be fun.

Q: Will we read a lot? 

A: We'll read a few stories or chapters per week.

Q: How many "papers" will I have to write?

A: None of the writing for the class is formal--in fact, most projects are creative and you can adapt them to your style.

Q: Will we read "the classics"?

A: Not really. There's a few older texts, but I focused on picking texts that should feel relevant to people living in Portland today! 

Q: How hard is it to get an A?

A: I grade on your labor, not whether you are "good" at this--so if you can commit to doing the reading and turning in work, you will probably earn a B at least.
