Details about this class
We live in strange and interesting times, and it can be difficult to separate myth from reality. I have designed this course to help learners better understand how we got here by exploring social, cultural, economic, and (of course) political changes in the United States from 1840 to 1914. Topics include westward expansion, the Civil War, Reconstruction, Indigenous resistance, the Gilded Age, and the Progressive Era.
This is a fully online, asynchronous class. There are no set meeting times, and you can
log in and do work when it suits your schedule. As your instructor, however, I promise to
be present and available through discussion forums, email, and detailed feedback on
your coursework. There will usually be coursework due every Thursday and Sunday.
I will host an optional Zoom orientation during the first week of the term in which I will
introduce myself and the online course layout.
The bulk of the coursework will be six discussion posts and an ongoing, multi-part "Be
the Historian" project. There are no quizzes or exams in this course.
Technology
There is no additional technology required for this class.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class. It is important to log in as soon as the class starts to see what the participation requirements are.
