This class was formerly called MTH 243.

This course incorporates social justice topics and culturally responsive teaching. Weekly you'll be completing homework, activities, and complete a project by the end of the term. There are two proctored exams, too.

Virtually Proctored Exams: All PCC MTH/STAT courses use proctored exams to assess student learning, with exams usually proctored in-person at a PCC campus and/or testing facility. The exams in this class will be proctored virtually in Zoom with me, your instructor, on the following dates and times:

Midterm Exam (two choices of times):

• Thursday, May 1st, 2024, from 6p - 8pm on Zoom (or you can go to the testing center, in person or virtually) or
• Friday, May 2nd, 2024, from noon -2pm on Zoom (or you can go to the testing center, in person or virtually)
• Testing center tests must be completed on/by Monday, May 5th

Final Exam:

• Tuesday, June 10th, 10-noon on Zoom (or you can go to the testing center, in person or virtually)
• Testing center tests must be completed on/by Wednesday, June 11th.

Virtually proctored exams involve the following technology requirements:

1. Access to a modern computer system with a supported operating system (OS) installed
2. a broadband internet provider or mobile carrier with LTE or better service
3. a microphone
4. a detachable webcam and/or mobile device (such as a smartphone, tablet, etc.).

Should you prefer to take your exams in-person (you'll take the same test but at a testing center on a campus), alternative proctoring arrangements can be made with a testing center (which may involve a nominal student-paid fee if the testing facility is outside of PCC). In the rare event of an unavoidable scheduling conflict, please contact me as soon as possible. With adequate notice, alternative proctoring arrangements can be made.

*Virtual proctoring means having your exam proctored by an approved proctor on Zoom on a specific day and time. It is the student’s responsibility to find a quiet, isolated, and well-lit location.

**In-person proctoring means having your exam proctored by an approved proctor at an in-person testing facility on a specific day and time.

Q: How do I access the course?
A: Log into MyPCC. On the main webpage, in the Quick Links window on the left, you will see the link for D2L Brightspace login. Click on that and you'll find our course shell.

Q: When should I start the course?
A: On the first day of the term, or sooner because the course will be live a few days before the start of the term. The longer you wait to access the course, the chance of succeeding in the course diminishes. When you access the D2L course and participate in the activities it is the equivalent of attending a face-to-face course.

Q: Is an online course self-paced?
A: The online course is not self-paced, but you can work ahead when modules open up early. The pace is set by the instructor who releases modules containing instructional videos and assignments on a weekly basis. In about a week period you get to decide when you will study, but it cannot be done all in 1 day or even all in 2 days. You will need to study every other day at a minimum to put what you learn into long-term memory. 

This class does NOT MEET SYNCHRONOUSLY.

This class does have TWO VIRTUALLY PROCTORED tests. 

You will NOT NEED A GRAPHING CALCULATOR for this course, so don't go buy one for this course (unless you love calculators! :) ). We'll use free, online technology to do our calculations (Stapplet, StatKey, Google Sheets, Geogebra, etc). If you have a handheld calculator you are very welcome to use it! 

For online homework we will use MyOpenMath, a free online homework system.

This course will require some written assignments. This will require students to download the pdf document, print the document, complete the document by hand, scan the document using a traditional scanner or scanning app and then uploaded to the appropriate assignment folder.
