What is Pride? A Brief History
Pride marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a watershed moment in LGBTQ+ History often heralded as the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The Stonewall Riots were a series of demonstrations that began in the early morning hours of June 28th, 1969 at New York City gay bar The Stonewall Inn in response to anti-trans and anti-gay police violence during a police raid. In 1960s New York, it was routine for police to raid gay bars and arrest anyone they considered to be “crossdressing.” While there isn’t clear consensus among those there that night about how the riots began, we do know that trans women of color like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were on the front lines. The following year in 1970, the first annual Pride March was held on the anniversary of the riots. Today, Pride events continue to be held annually around the world to honor our histories, celebrate our victories, and continue the struggle for justice for all LGBTQ+ people.
Frequently asked questions
What If I need to ride? PCC Shuttle Information:
The vehicle joining us during the parade this year is the PCC shuttle. Participants can choose to ride the shuttle for the duration of the march. Please note the following:
- Limited seats are available– seats will be reserved for those who requested accommodations through the registration form. If you requested accommodation, you will receive a separate confirmation email. If you do not receive a confirmation, but you would like to reserve a seat please contact the QRC team at qrc@pcc.edu. All remaining seats will be first come, first served.
- For safety reasons, there are no board/deboard opportunities during the parade. If you choose to march outside, you will not be able to ride the shuttle midway through the parade. If you choose to ride the shuttle, you will not be able to exit until the end of the route. Please keep this in mind and choose before we step off.
- The shuttle drop off point is different from the drop off point for the rest of the contingent–if staying together as a party is important to you and your companions, please keep this in mind.
- The shuttle deboard point will be at SW Naito & SW Morrison. Volunteers will assist in taking down decorations at this stop. Please help us expedite this process to allow the shuttle to return to PCC on time.
- Finally, please do not store personal items on the shuttle unless you are riding the shuttle. If you are riding the shuttle, please keep your personal belongings close by so the deboarding process goes as smoothly as possible.
How do I get to / from the Parade?
Please note downtown will be very, very busy. Some streets (Glisan through Burnside, and Broadway through NW 10th, at minimum) will be closed for the parade, buses may be using alternate routes, and parking will be extremely limited. Utilizing public transportation or rideshare services is encouraged.
What will PCC provide?
We will have limited supplies of t-shirts, water bottles, sparkling water, snacks, temporary tattoos, face paint, poster making supplies, pride flags, and fragrance-free sunscreen. We will also have a limited supply of face masks and earplugs, available by request. You are welcome to bring additional items for yourself (or to share with others!), but be prepared to carry your items yourself. For accessibility, please also be mindful of limiting scents and fragrances when packing your own sunscreen, lotion, etc.
What should I wear/bring?
Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather, and be as comfortable and festive as you wish! We have limited PCC Pride shirts, and if you have one from previous years, we ask you to wear that one if possible. Many people choose to wear rainbows, bring flags, and show other displays of pride. You can also bring a pre-made poster to march with or make one upon arrival. If there is something you can bring that will make your experience more comfortable given the amount of time we’ll be outside, the weather, dietary needs, etc. you are encouraged to do so. Please note we do not have the ability to store personal items during the parade. Plan to keep all personal items with you for the duration of the Parade.
Can I bring pets & service animals?
Pets and service animals are welcome to join you in the parade. The parade and festival will be crowded and noisy so please be aware of your pet’s limits. You are responsible for their behavior and safety. All animals should be leashed.
Can I bring bikes, skates, or scooters?
Due to the nature of the event and size of our group, we are not able to accommodate any wheeled vehicles other than our registered shuttle and personal mobility devices, which include wheelchairs and strollers/wagons for children.
